Plans for a £775 million redevelopment project of the Paddington Quarter have been approved by Westminster Council.
The scheme involves the construction of a new building dubbed ‘The Cube’ and the regeneration of the area around Paddington Station.
The Paddington Quarter is expected to create 4,000 new jobs and contribute an extra £350 million to the UK economy every year.
The project has been described as a ‘game changer’ for Paddington.
The plans have been designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and submitted by developers Great Western Developments Ltd and Sellar Paddington Limited (SPL).
The Paddington Quarter will feature new retail outlets, restaurants and a piazza.
Irvine Sella, Chairman of SPL, said the Paddington Quarter would be “a catalyst to create a thriving neighbourhood – for retail, leisure and business”.
The project will help to improve transport infrastructure, easing traffic congestion in the area. The aim is also to make Paddington a destination in its own right.
Work on the development will get underway early next year, and will take place alongside the work already be carried out around Paddington Station as regards to Crossrail.
