Spotlight on: Westminster Boating Base

An interest to try kayaking, sailing or powerboating might compel you to look for training opportunities closer to the coast, but you don’t need to venture that far.

Westminster Boating Base (a stone’s throw from Pimlico tube station) offers training to those who want to master kayaking, canoeing, dinghy sailing, or powerboating.

Westminster Boating Base is an independent charity which provides training in watersports and boating to both young people, adults, schools and community groups. All training sessions take place on the River Thames at Westminster. Based in a riverside park, the venue also hosts a wide variety of events – both private and corporate – as well as seminars, conferences, and weddings.

We want to raise the profile of Westminster Boating Base to make people aware of the excellent work they’re doing while receiving no grants of subsidies – their work is mainly financed through their fundraising efforts.

 The Youth Programme

The Youth Programme caters to individuals aged 10 – 23 years, and only costs £15 per year. As part of this programme, candidates can master the art of sailing and kayaking. The aim of the Youth Programme is to get young people engaged in watersports, while allowing them to learn new skills and further develop as individuals. This training is open to all, but the low cost of tuition is intended to make the charity’s programme accessible to young people, regardless of financial background.

Training for schools and groups

Powerboating, sailing and kayaking accredited courses are available, or candidates can simply enjoy a fun session of learning how to handle one of these boats. The charity also runs training sessions for young people during school term time. Each course or training session usually consists of 12 candidates.

Whether you want to try kayaking, canoeing, dinghy sailing, or powerboating, Westminster Boating Base offers training for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. It’s not all water-based activities, however. The charity also offers training in navigation, seamanship, and aquatic first aid, among other skills.

Social events

Members benefit from the variety of social events organised and held at Westminster Boating Base, which this year includes a summer regatta and a Christmas party. Members – young people and adults – can meet and socialise with other watersporting enthusiasts, making full use of the facilities available. The money raised from hosting these events goes towards financing the cost of offering training in watersports.
