The area around London’s Victoria Station continues to undergo considerable redevelopment. Though traditionally known for being a major transport interchange and little else, the Victoria area extends beyond Victoria Station. Its redevelopment aims to improve its standing as a destination in its own right, not simply a place to pass through on route to somewhere else.
Westminster City Council, in its Victoria Area Planning Brief, has said it wants to ‘see the Victoria area achieve its potential as a top commercial, residential and visitor destination.’ Working alongside the Greater London Authority and Transport for London, the Council’s development plans involve preserving the area’s ‘heritage assets’ and landmark structures, while recognising the need for change, the sensitive improvement of offices and residential buildings, and the general enhancement of the surrounding townscape.
So how has the Victoria area changed in recent years, and will it continue to change?
The Nova Building
The Nova Building, which won the less than illustrious Carbuncle Cup award for the UK’s worst new building in 2017, has nonetheless played a prominent role in transforming Victoria and its environs. A mixed-use building with a dramatically angular exterior, the apartments and penthouses within the building are perfect for those who want to be based near transport facilities and London’s commercial and entertainment districts, while new shops, offices and restaurants have helped revitalise the area for local residents, workers and visitors alike.
Improved transport facilities
Work is being carried out to improve Victoria Station and boost capacity of the underground station. The key aim is to improve connectivity and relieve congestion around the area, making it easier for passengers to pass in and out of the station. The improvement works include: a new ticket hall, nine new escalators, complete step-free access, and a new interchange. The project itself is due to be completed in 2018.
New residential developments
The Nova Building holds 170 flats. Some are larger two or three-bedroom flats, and there are luxury penthouses. The 55 Victoria Street (55VS) building comprises a collection of 57 apartments, while No 1 Palace Street offers new flats and penthouses, and there are other options on Chapter Street.
