Christmas in Pimlico and Westminster - what's going on?

Though Christmas seems to become more commercialised as each year passes, there’s always a little magic in the air as Christmas Day approaches. From the John Lewis Christmas advert, whose annual release has turned into a major media event, to the switching on of the seasonal street lights, it’s hard not to smile at all the festive cheer.

Luckily for us, London does Christmas rather well. As London lights up – quite literally – for Christmas, we thought it useful to reveal what’s going in Pimlico and Westminster this year, and where to head to if you’re struggling for Christmas gift inspiration.

Christmas markets

Christmas markets have become the face of this festival. Most towns and cities in the UK now hold some form of Christmas market, and there’s always plenty of options for Londoners. From stalls selling mulled wine, mince pies, hot cider, roasted chestnuts, and eggnog to decorations, arts and crafts, you can take your pick of which to attend.

The annual Victoria Christmas Market will be held in Cardinal Place on 14th December from 11:30am to 9:30pm, where visitors can buy the finest artisanal foods and gifts. We also recommend you head to Belgravia’s Elizabeth Street on 4th December. On this day, the much-loved upmarket shopping destination will be turned into a winter wonderland replete with craft stalls, entertainment for children, food and drink, a brass band and a choir. Alternatively, take a stroll to Leicester Square where you’ll find stalls, Santa’s grotto, a spiegeltent, a Christmas market and cabaret performances.

Carol concerts

The atmosphere at carol concerts can be electric, and if you enjoy singing carols with others then there are plenty to choose from in Westminster, including:

  • The Way to Westminster service takes place at Westminster Cathedral on the 16th and 17th December, and will include traditional carols and readings from celebrity guests.
  • A Service of Lessons and Carols will be held in the awe-inspiring arena of Westminster Abbey on 24th December. Some services at the abbey are not ticketed, but the Christmas Eve service does require tickets, so book as early as possible.

Gift shops for Christmas

If inspiration for Christmas gifts is in short supply, you might be on the lookout for retail recommendations. Whether you need stocking fillers or something unique to place under the tree, you’ll be bound to find something at the event, Christmas on Pimlico Road. This takes place on 3rd December in Orange Square. There will be live music, market stalls heaving from the weight of gifts and goodies, and of course, Pimlico Road is renowned for its selection of design and antique shops. Alternatively, The Nova Building near Victoria Station boasts a wide range of shops and eateries – the perfect place to spend a day buying your Christmas gifts. You’ll find specialist shops and more familiar brands on Cardinal Place.
