Despite government efforts to boost homeownership levels, more tenants are choosing to rent for longer.
The creation of a number of aids to help people onto the property ladder, including the Help to Buy schemes, has made an impact, but the number of people owning their own home remains on the decline.
This reality is evidenced in the English Housing Survey, published annually, which shows that from 2015-16, just over 62% of households owned their own home, which is lower than any other year since 1985.
However, though many renters would prefer to own their own property, there are growing numbers of tenants who happily rent and actively choose to continue renting.
For many, renting is preferable as it means less financial burden, no property maintenance worries, greater flexibility in being able to move when desired or when necessary, such as for a new job, and greater freedom.
Not only are some tenants content to continue renting, increasing numbers are content to rent in the long-term, potentially never owning a home.
In parts of Central London in particular, many renters have been priced out of the dream of homeownership, but still want a Central London location, so renting is the solution.
