Westminster City Council will launch a ‘community contribution’ scheme which will enable wealthier residents of the borough to voluntarily pay more in council tax.
Following a consultation last year, which met with a largely positive response, Westminster City Council is pushing ahead with its plans to ask residents in the highest-value properties in the borough to contribute more in tax.
The proceeds will go to a good cause. The money raised from the scheme will go towards tackling homelessness in the borough and supporting youth clubs and other community support enterprises.
The scheme is entirely voluntary, giving those who want to contribute more to their local community the ability to do so.
Westminster City Council Leader, Nickie Aiken, said: “I decided to act on a growing number of requests from some residents who live in the highest valued homes that they wanted to voluntarily contribute more than their existing council tax.”
Aiken continued: “I am delighted that so many people want to support the initiative in its first year.”
This scheme will be rolled out in due course.
