Tenant Fees Ban: new guidance notes for agents and landlords

The government have issued new guidance notes ahead of the Tenant Fees Act coming into force on the 1st of June 2019.

From that date new tenancies cannot have fees applied but existing tenancies can still have fees charged until the 1st of June 2020, after which the new law applies to all tenancies.

The government aims “to reduce the costs that tenants can face at the outset, and throughout, a tenancy, and is part of a wider package of measures aimed at rebalancing the relationship between tenants and landlords to deliver a fairer, good quality and more affordable private rented sector.”

Policing of the Act will be conducted by local Trading Standards and Citizens Advice.
